We already know what night shift workers want: more sleep. While we work on a way to store sleep in a bottle, here are 12 other ideas for a hard-working shift worker in your life. Trust us, they’ll love them. (Psssst…. It’s totally fine if these are a gift for yourself!

For the homebody

Give the gift of cozy vibes for your favourite night shifter to enjoy during her well-earned downtime.

Weighted eye mask

You’ve heard about weighted blankets. But have you discovered weighted eye masks yet?! We particularly like this one, since it’s covered in soft fabric, has an adjustable band and the inner beads can be rearranged to make it perfectly comfortable. And it’s washable!

Cozy wool socks

This recommendation comes from Amy, one of our Instagram followers. She specifically recommends the Pacas brand. Although she typically wears their regular style of socks, she also told us they make compression socks that “aren’t like prescription ones but are lovely to wear.”

Lavender Oil

We’re big fans of using essential oils around here. When we asked shift workers what they wanted, we found out they agreed. Specifically, the requests came in for lavender. And it’s no wonder—lavender essential oils may help reduce stress, anxiety, and insomnia.

I love this roller version that can be used at bedtime or thrown in a travel bag. (It also has great reviews and supports a small business.)

For the creative

Let her inner artist shine with these fun gifts.

Bullet Journal

Can 30,000 five-star Amazon reviews be wrong? We love the entire LEUCHTTURM1917 notebook series, but especially this A5 MEDIUM-sized notebook since it’s big enough for lots of writing but small enough to be portable.

And did we mention they come in an entire rainbow of colours?

Jewellery that tells a story

Founded by dentist Linda Van Merky, this jewellery brand was built as a stylish way to show off a passion for all things medical. And, WOW, does it deliver.

I’m currently wearing the cigar bandage ring, stacked with this sparkly one. If you’re unsure of your loved one’s ring size, go for a necklace with a few charms—she can add more as she goes!

Paint by numbers

These fun kits come with everything needed to make a set of coordinating masterpieces. This is a great gift to encourage your loved one to unwind after a set of long shifts—and get her crafty on!

For the newbie

Set her up for success with all the gear she’ll need to shine on the night shift.

(Pretty) compression stockings

Sistasaidso+ graduated compression socks are tailor-made for nurses, enhancing blood circulation and reducing discomfort. These beauties are made for nurses, by nurses. And did we mention how fun and colourful they are? Grab a single pair or a three-pack.

Tactical lunch bag

I have this lunch bag (in army green!) and I loooooove it so much. Do I get strange looks that this cooler is just for me and not for a family of five? Yes. Do I care? Sorry, couldn’t hear the question over my little snacky-snack.

Okay, why I love this bag: the top is expandable so you can zip it closed if you want a smaller bag. You can fit large beverage bottles into the side pockets. And there are straps on the back to clip on your keys, badge, etc.

Motivational water bottle

Keep your loved one hydrated with this huge, fun waterbottle. It’s leak-proof and shatter-proof. It can be hard to drink enough water during a busy overnight shift, but this water bottle will nudge your night shifter to keep chugging—and remind her how much you love her!

For the book lover

Is there anything better than cracking open a new book? Give the gift of reading and writing with these picks.

A laugh-til-you-cry book of short stories

Give the night shifter in your life the gift of a good belly laugh with a book by Canadian writer Stuart McLean. While I love ALL of his work, you can’t go wrong with “Home From the Vinyl Cafe.” It opens with a story about a quest for a frozen turkey that will have them in tears.

The prettiest notebook

Okay, confession. I love everything Rifle Paper Co. makes (and have the wallpaper and sneakers to prove it!) This gorgeous embroidered notebook is no exception.

The night shifter in your life can use this for journalling as part of their bedtime routine or to keep track of their fav reads. Oh, and it has lay-flat binding so it’s easy to write in.

A heart-wrenching page turner

I’m not one for historical fiction, but “The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah stole my heart and I’ve thought about it very often since reading it. It’s the story of two sisters in German-occupied, war-torn France that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit. If you only grab one Kristin Hannah book, make it this one.
